X20.D : Magnetic Braking and Electric Taxiing for Air Force Aircraft

Inductive Ventures (IV) proposes to build and test a full-scale, active magnetic brake that is able to provide the necessary braking and stopping forces to land a commercial C-17, C-130, or Future Vertical Lift (FVL) sized aircraft. IV will use previous testing data and “lessons learned” from the prior versions of the magnetic brake that were built and tested by the company under previous Programs. During this Phase 2, we will work with the Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI) to optimize the brake design, integrate desirable design changes, and then build an active magnetic brake that is able to stop the candidate aircraft as well as provide taxiing capabilities to the aircraft. It is anticipated that this new brake will be significantly lighter, more robust, and will greatly increase the technology readiness level (TRL) of the active magnetic brake technology. This phase will also look at packaging of the power electronics for implementation onto the aircraft.
